Chat & Messaging

There are two ways to send messages in Joinable: 1) through Chat, 2) or through message threads attached to Activities. Both cases use the same messaging tool — a simple chat interface for one-on-one, group, or chat with members of a Circle.

Notifications

New messages notifications will appear differently for Chat messaging and messaging within Activities. In both cases a push notification (if enabled) and/or in-app notification will alert you to new messages, mentions, replies, etc.

New Chat notifications

In the case of Chat messages, unread messages will place an orange dot on the Chat icon in the main navigation UI. Clicking in to Chat will show which message threads have unread messages.

New messages in Activities

You will not receive notifications for messaging in Activities unless you are either the Activity owner or you are participating in the Activity. Unread messages will appear in the Notifications tab (bell shaped icon in the top right of the app). Clicking on the unread noticed will open the Activity Chat.

Chat Anatomy

The Chat card and the top of each Chat shows who is in each message thread. A 1:1 message will only show the name of the person you are messaging. If there are multiple members, they will be separated by commas. A Circle name (with the overlapping circle icon) indicates the message was sent to members of a Circle.

Creating a new Chat message

  1. Click the Chat tab, then the orange button at the top of the app labeled "+ Chat."
  2. Choose connections or a Circle (you can only choose one Circle and cannot mix connections and Circles)
  3. Click "Done" and start messaging!

Note: when messaging a Circle, you may only message your connections within that Circle. In some cases, a Hosted Circle can support members messaging members who are not connections.

Chat threads

New chat threads can be created for group or Private Circle chats. Threads differ from a simple chat as they have a "topic" which is displayed in the chat card. Clicking the "+ Chat" button will only give the option to create or join an ongoing general chat.

To create a chat thread for Private Circles, there are two ways to initiate:

  • Click Connect, then open the Private Circle card. Click "New Thread," add a topic, and you'll start a new chat with all the members of the Private Circle with the topic stated at the top of the chat.
  • Open an existing chat, click the context menu ( ••• at the top of the page), then choose "New Thread."

To create a chat thread for a 1:1 or group chat:

  • Open or create a chat with the people you'd like to include, then click the context menu ( ••• at the top of the page), then choose "New Thread."

You can leave reactions/emojis to messages or comment. In the mobile app, press-and-hold on a message to open the context menu with emojis and options. In the web/desktop app, hover over the message and an "Options" button will appear.
